Marge Mitchell, Sashiko Garments

Sashiko is a form of Japanese folk embroidery using a form of the running stitch to create a patterned background. This form of embroidery, which is also popular in quilting, uses straight or curved geometric designs stitched in a repeating pattern. The Japanese word sashiko means little stabs and refers to the small stitches used in this form of needlework


Deb Heatherly, Creative Grids rulers & Trunk show

Deb Heatherly will present a lecture/trunk show which covers a variety of Creative Grids rulers – she will demonstrate the rulers and give you ideas on how to use them to create wonderful effects in your quilts.. She is offering a workshop on the 17th which will include hands on instruction on four or five Creative Grids rulers.

Sashiko Origami Purse with Marge Mitchell

You will create a small purse using Sashiko stitching.  The required $15 kit fee includes all materials and supplies necessary to complete the project (Pattern, fabric, thread, needle and any other supplies).

Member Fee:  $25 plus $15 pattern/kit fee paid to the instructor at the workshop.

Non-Member Fee:  $10 more than member cost.

Traditional Mitered Binding with Stephanie Conklin

You will learn basic mitered corner bindings.  Charity quilts made by guild members will be available for practice and once completed, will be given to the YCQG Outreach Program for distribution.  You may choose to bring your own quilt to bind and keep OR donate to the outreach program.  If you bring your own quilt, you will also need to bring your own binding fabric.

Creative Grids Sampler Workshop with Deb Heatherly

Hands on instruction on five creative grids rulers with reference to other tools that may utilize the same type of technique.  Students bring their machine and all regular sewing supplies.  No fabric is required as a pre-cut “teaching kit” will be provided for students to learn. at no additional fee.  Please see newsletter for further details.

Hand Quilting – Two Methods by Jane Garrison and Teresa Justice

Saturday, April 7, 2018 9:00 am to 3:00pm

Hand quilting is a relaxing, satisfying way for completing your quilt. In this workshop, Jane will instruct the rocking method and Teresa will instruct the stab method. You will have the opportunity to learn and practice both methods of hand quilting.

The kit includes all the fabric, batting, needles and thread necessary for the project. You will need to bring to the workshop a quilt hoop (10″, 12″ or 14″) and scissors for snipping threads.

Joseph’s Coat by Pat Yamin

Learn easy methods of sewing convex and concave curves.  The piecing can be done by hand or machine in class using a variety of scrap fabrics in light, medium, and dark shades OR you can use only three colors of fabric to create an interlocking pattern.  Pat will give you hints and show you techniques for making your interesections meet and your blocks lay flat.

Watercolor Florals by Joyce Walton

Students will master using water-soluble artists’ crayons in conjunction with a wet brush to achieve realistic looking flowers and botanicals.  After the painting is completed, border treatments will be explored along with free motion thread painting tips.  No previous art background is necessary.  Kit includes PFD muslin, fabric medium, botanical drawings, and photographs.

Laurel Crowns & Blossoms by Sherri Turevon

This techniques based class will introduce you to simple, quick, & portable steps that make English Paper Piecing faster than ever.  Kit includes fabrics, shape papers, and and acrylic template with non-slide ring.  Quilt measures 12″x18″.

Included will be hints for hand-stitching…covering the whip stitch and turned edge applique.  (Other options for appliqueing – hand or machine blanket stitch).  The project is scraps and fat quarter friendly.

There is a set class minimum, as well as a class maximum, so please sign up as early as possible to help ensure the class makes!

Full Day classes will break for lunch so please come prepared with a bag lunch. Beverages ~ in a closed-lid container ~ are welcomed.

QUILTING 201 – Moving Beyond the Basics

Date:  Saturday, June 24  9am-3pm

Where:  Grace Lutheran Church – downstairs classroom at end of the hall on the right

Fee:  $45; includes the fabric kit and instructions to make samples of techniques mentioned below.  NOTE:  This is a technique, not a project class.

The goals of this class are:

  • Perfecting your rotary cutting skills
  • Evaluating a pattern to make it faster to assemble
  • Several ways to make half square and quarter square triangles
  • Easy ways to make Flying Geese and Square in a Square
  • Piecing sharp angles and curves
  • Paper piecing basics
  • Machine piecing an Eight Point Star block

Student Supplies:

Sewing machine in good working order with extension cord, 1/4″ piecing foot, extra needles and the Machine instruction book, rotary cutting mat (approximately 18″), rotary cutter plus extra blades, 12″x6″ ruler (or similar size), scissors, pins, off-white or grey thread, paper bag for trash, pen or pencil, and note paper.  Bring a lunch.
