Class Summary: Scrappy Appliqué is perfect for both beginner and advanced quilters. Participants will learn how to take fabric scraps and turn them into gorgeous applique pieces using Shannon Brikley’s signature technique: Scrappy Appliqué. Each Project will be a unique expression of participant’s creativity. Participants choose their favorite pattern (available to purchase at the workshop) and learn Scrappy Appliqué technique step-by-step.
Required Supplies:
*Starred items are included in the optional Appliqué Kit, available for purchase at the workshop for $25.00 to be paid to the instructor on class day.
- Scrappy Appliqué Pattern
- Scrap fabric for the collaged appliqué piece – equivalent to 8-12 fat eighths is perfect. You can use scraps from your scrap bin. I recommend pieces approx. 4″ x 8″ for your first project. Once you have technique down, you can try smaller pieces (leftover 2.5″ strips work great.)
- *Fusible Web – I love MistyFuse. Soft Fuse, or WonderWeb works well too.
- *Lightweight Fusible Interfacing – 906F is preferred
- *Stabilizer – I recommend Sulky’s Totally Stable, Iron-on, Tear-away Stabilizer. This will only be used if you finish your appliqué with a satin stitch.
- *Clear Polyester Monofilament Thread – Used for top stitching. Alternately, you can use a fine weight (100 wt) blending thread.
- Thread to coordinate with your scrap/collage fabric
- Background Fabric – See Pattern for yardage – basically the size of your finished quilt.
- Fray Check by Dritz – Optional but helpful in securing raw edges
- Iron & Large Pressing Surface – an old towel is perfect.
- Parchment Paper or Applique Pressing Sheets
- Marking pen that will NOT be removed by heat – micron pen or other pen that won’t smear easily works great.
- Basic sewing supplies and your sewing machine
